Northern lights in Iceland

edited June 2013 in Europe
I´m  planning a trip to Iceland to see the Northern lights.  I was thinking about Dec 2013 or Jan 2014.  Advice on accommodations, excursions and best NL spots are appreciated!

  • Hi evabo,

Apparently Iceland is a good place to see the northern lights, and an increasingly popular tourist destination this forum thread has some great tips for seeing the northern lights in Iceland, and if you're thinking of going there you can check out this Iceland travel guide for more info!
  • Hello evabo.  Both months are good to visit Iceland for a Northern lights hunt.  The aurora can´t be guaranteed but it´s helpful to keep track on the forecast
There are many nice hotels in Reykjavik but if you plan on staying outside of Reykjavik a part of your stay, there are many nice hotels like Hotel Ranga and ION.    Tours are running all year round (depending on weather though) like whale watching, snowmobiling and Golden Circle.
  • I saw the lights after a failed previous trip... If you want to see how I increased my chances of seeing the Northern Lights-take a look at this:

It also includes some fab pictures and time lapse video.  There is a live video feed to the aurora sky station in the post too

Iceland isn't actually the best place to see them... My brother went to Iceland in February to see them and came away disappointed... That said-lots of other amazing stuff to see and do there if you dont manage to see the Aurora!
