Travelling in Nicaragua - where to start?

I'm touring through a few countries in Central America before making my way down to Peru and a few other countries. So far I've planned to travel through Guatemala and Honduras, but I've not heard much about Nicaragua. I've read up a bit about it, but not many sites give very good information on it as a tourist destination, yet I'm strangely intrigued by it as it's not often you meet people who have been there.

Has anyone recently travelled to Nicaragua who can give me some good advice and recommendations on what to see, where to stay, good backpackers and hostels, and anything else that might be useful? Is it safe?
Obviously I'll be flying into Managua International Airport so I'd also like to know if it's worth haning round this city at all to explore or if I should just skip it?

Please, can anyone help me?

    Take a look at this:

Nicaragua is a great country, and very much under-rated. It has emerged from a recent civil war, and is slowly opening up to tourism, so it's cheap, friendly, gritty, but always exciting! Do not stay in Managua, there is nothing to see there. My advice would be to trasnfer immediately to the gorgeous colonial city of Granada which is only about an hour away. The best hostel in town is the Bearded Monkey ( They can assist you with everything you need, as well as organise local tours for you, such as Masaya Volcano National Park, and Kayaking around Las Isletas on Lake Nicaragua. Spend a few nights in Granada, you'll love it. Then go to the island of Ometepe, a hikers paradise. You can climb two volcanoes, one is active. There is a bunch of other stuff to do as well. A great place to stay is Monkey Island Hostel ( From Ometepe head to the pacific coast and the town of San Juan del Sur. A good hostel there is called Casa Oro. They can organise night tours to the turtle beach to watch nesting turtles. San Juan del Sur is very popular place to surf or learn how to surf. Make sure you get to see the best beach in the area called Bahia Mahagual, you will never want to leave!! From San Juan del Sur I would recommend heading across the border into Costa Rica.
