3 week family trip to Krabi area

edited January 2011 in - Thailand
Dear Travelers
We are planning a 3 week trip to Krabi area in Mid April. We have never been to this area and have 2 young boys 3y and 6ys. What is best destanation once landed at Krabi airport in order to get our bearings and chill after the long flight from the UK (may feel like killing small child by this stage)? After few days (not killing child) chilling out, we'd like to visit a few different locations in the area, one or two islands and perhaps in land? Any suggestions please? And finally best mode of transport for us?
Any other handy hints for travelling with young kids, greatfully received.
Thanks in advance.

I would probably say to get a taxi to Ao Nang (40mins from Krabi Airport), a really beautiful area of the Krabi region, great infrastructure and lovely beaches. Lots of accommodation here too. From Ao Nang, you could catch a ferry to Railay Bay (just 10mins away), which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area and great for families as it has a low key nightlife, but plenty of restaurants and lovely beach bungalows to stay in. Ko Lanta is also close by to Ao Nang, a big island with lots of beaches to choose from and again with a good infrastructure but not too many tourists and a low key nightlife, so perfect for little ones. You can also organise elephant rides here! Ko Raya, can also be accessed by speedboat from Phuket (not too far from Krabi) and is great for kids as its traffic free. Lovely beaches and great for snorkelling and diving. If you and your family are interested in wildlife, you could travel to Khao Sok national park and stay in simple jungle bungalows for a few nights! It's only a few hours away from Krabi and Phuket and a lot of families visit this park. A tip for travelling with kids would be to take armbands/small life jackets so you feel safe when your kids are swimming or taking the longtail boats between islands. I would either take Taxi's (agree a set price before you travel) or Sawngthaews (shared pickup trucks). Have a great trip!
