Train travel in South Africa

edited March 2011 in - Southern Africa
We will be in South Africa for a week in December arriving in Cape Town and leaving from Jo'burg. We want to go on the Premier Classe train but I can't find a secure way to book it - any ideas?
Also what else is recommended, we want to visit the winelands but probably not drive ourselves.

Best bet is check You will find them well informed with plenty of ideas for things to do in/around Cape Town. Apart from the winelands (which with a rental car are much more fun and flexible to explore than going with a tour operator) there is the Cape Town V&A Waterfront, Robben Island trips (where Mandela was imprisoned), a great day drive around the Cape Peninsula (again best in rental car) and of course a trip up Table Mountain in its famous revolving cable car.

Google car rental in Cape Town. For inexpensive rentals try Dayway Car Hire at otherwise all the Big Guys are here - Avis, Hertz, Budget, EuropCar etc.

Cape Town Tourism should have info on good trains to Jo'burg too.

Your only hassle will be that December is a busy tourism time in and around Cape Town. Prices are up and you need to book early. Otherwise enjoy our "Mother City" It's the best place in the world!!

I would rent a car and self-explore the winelands over the course of a day. It is very beautiful and safe to drive on your own steam. Much more conducive than on a large tour.

The train between Joburg and Cape Town is also a pleasant and scenic experience. Not quick or cheap though. Premier class will cost at least R2000 one way. If you want to book it securely, contact the peopel at - they are based in Cape Town and give excellent service. Please tell them we wordtravels sent you!
