Emergency repatriation: insurance implications?

edited June 2011 in World Wide
I was recently working as a volunteer in africa. I was staying in volunteer accommodation. It was raided by armed men, I was beaten round the head with a machete during the robbery and all sorts went on that I won't go into here. The trip was organised through a volunteer org. in the UK. They flew us home and paid for the flight. I have insurance but the insurance company are dragging their heals and I don't think they're going to pay even though i have amedical certificate to say I needed to get home. The volunteer org in the UK is now demanding that I pay them back the money for the flights. I have uninsured losses and think they should share some of the cost. Just wondered if anyone had any idea what the legalities might be?
