Best resorts in Canary Islands

edited March 2009 in - Spain and Portugal
Hello, I am looking into the best resorts / islands to go to in the Canary Islands. I have read a bit on but it would also be good to get some first-hand advice of someone who has been there recently. We are taking a large family - grandparents who want a relaxed time, parents who may want to do some sightseeing and children who want activities and nightlife! Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas seem quite good for nightlife, but might be a bit manic for the rest of us. Likewise Puerto Rico. How about Puerto Morgan? Or Playa del Cura, Las Palmas, Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda, Playa Blanca.... There seem so many I dont know where to begin. Also, is Lanzarote better than Gran Canaria. Any advise????!!! J

  • Hi Jason

The problem with choosing the Canary Islands is that there is so much that you can do on each of the islands. The best way to decide is to make a list of priorities. What are the most important things you want to do on holiday. Everyone has different ideas - doing nothing, activity holidays, eating, drinking, clubbing, exploring remote villages, shopping, golf, windsurfing, diving, walking, climbing, sailing and so it goes on.

Finding out more about what each island has to offer is the start, so have a look at a local website that gives lots of information. It gives details of all seven islands.

The larger islands - Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura - have the most activities and nightlife entertainment. The weather remains the same for most of the year, but different parts of each island have slightly different weather. So north Tenerife and north Gran Canaria tend to have more cloud cover and more chance of rain over the winter months, and that is why most tourists head to the south of these islands - however the north has a lot to offer with greener countryside. The website also has the current weather conditions and a forecast.

Once you have visited one island, you are bound to be drawn back again or tempted to try out one of the other islands.

The best part of a holiday is planning where you want to go and what you will do when you get there - for kids, grandparents and for the busy parents too!

    Good luck

Fuerteventura beaches are most certainly the best of the crop on the Canary Islands. Top choices include beaches undefinedsouth of Corralejo(left) backed on by sand dunes, the windy white sand stretches of El Cortillo to the north west, the sublime endless sands of Sotavento (popular with kite surfers and windsurfers and home to an international winsurfing competition annually), and finally the equally beautiful endless white sandy beaches of Morro Jable and further south near Coffete on Jandia. For superb sheltered family beaches with plenty of family friendly accommodation head to pretty Costa Calma, Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo.

Whether you want sitting, sunbathing or surfing North Tenerife has the lot. Safe for children and safe for the elderly. Lots of places to stay, nice flat walks (beware the hills in some parts of the Canaries)
Take a look at my new blog - hopefully it will whet your appetite!

  • Lanzarote one of the great places to visit in the canary island is one of my favorite and probably the most memorable one. I'm a heavy drinker and theres this one place in Lanzarote where they made the finest if not the greatest wine called bodegas, man that was very nice! But the main reason for my visit in Lanzarote is because of surfing. One of friends told me to go during the surfing season which is November-March and I did! And it didn't waste my time at all and money well spent. I almost forgot It's the most memorable place for me because this is here I finally met her! Happily married for 7 yrs now with one lovely daughter. I'll be returning here anytime soon that's for sure.
