Best time to see Northern lights?

edited June 2013 in Europe
Hi everyone.  I´m starting to plan a trip to Iceland to see the Northern lights.  When would be the best time to go and where should I stay?  Or should I just book the first couple of nights and then travel around, hoping to see the aurora?  I´m thinking about staying there for 7-10 days.  Many thanks! :)

I saw the lights after a failed previous trip... If you want to see how I increased my chances of seeing the Northern Lights-take a look at this:

It also includes some fab pictures and time lapse video.  There is a live video feed to the aurora sky station in the post too
  • When the sky is dark, you can see only northern lights. The best time to see the northern lights is when the sky is clear of any clouds. The northern lights are seen between 17:00 and 02:00.
